Tunisia has been invaded and occupied throughout it's history and at one time dominnated much of the Western Mediterranean. During the 5th and 6th centuries occupation was by the ROMANS where amazing colisieums such as carthage and El Jem were built. There followed the Arab conquest of 648-669 AD where Tunisia was ruled by a variety of Arab dynasties. From here invasion continued by the Turks, Barbary Pirates and then in 1881 by French troops. Tunisia gained independence from France in 1956.
