Climate and Weather

The climate in Tunisia varies with the region and is divided between both Mediterranean in the North and African in the south. In the North, Tunisia has a typical mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters, when there is most rainfall. In this area of Tunisia the best periods to visit are spring and Autumn as the temperatures during mid summer often exceed 40c. Due to the Sahara the southern region experiences unpleasant summers with high humidity which makes the region avid and dry. The Desert region of Tunisia is always a few degrees higher than the rest.

Landscape

Tunisia is a small country in North Africa, bordered on the south by Libya and Algeria on the west. Located on the Mediterranean, Tunisia has some beautiful beaches. It has an extremely varied landscape packed into it's small land area. The legendary Sahara desert covers almost 40% of Tunisia's landscape, across the southern area of the country. This low feature is dramatically contrasted by the "Dorsal" which is the northern edge of the " Atlas Mountains" rising out of the north west corner of Tunisia. The northern tip of Tunisia is characterized by low rolling plains, and hills called The Tell, the sahil plain covers most of the North East peninsula's, and is famous for it's Olive production. the steppes lay between the Sahil and the Dorsal.

Economy

Tunisia's economy has continued to grow, over recent decades particulary in the 1990's making the country one of the most attractive in Africa.

Tunisia's industries produce textiles, leather, steel, foods and beverages. Tourism is also an important economic activity. Half of Tunisia's workers are agriculture involved with farming. The leading crops are olives, wheat, barley, tomatoes, sugar beats, dates and almonds.
The Dinar is the currency of Tunisia and this a " closed currency " which means you cannot purchase Dinar outside of the country. The dinar was introduced in 1960 to replace the French Franc.

History

Tunisia has been invaded and occupied throughout it's history and at one time dominnated much of the Western Mediterranean. During the 5th and 6th centuries occupation was by the ROMANS where amazing colisieums such as carthage and El Jem were built. There followed the Arab conquest of 648-669 AD where Tunisia was ruled by a variety of Arab dynasties. From here invasion continued by the Turks, Barbary Pirates and then in 1881 by French troops. Tunisia gained independence from France in 1956.
